sporadic at best

yeah yeah, i’m not doing so hot at keeping things posted up here. my life just isn’t necessarily that interesting to me, so i don’t feel the need to pass on the pleasure sometimes. just as a warning, it’s late and i’m tired so it’s gonna be a wierd one… hold one to your tighty whiteys. or tighty  Saturdays, depending.

First off, I saw the DaVinci Code tonight. Secondly, I watched it in a situation best described as a date. I read the DaVinci Code book, and it was alright, but way bloodier than the movie. I also read it while traveling around the cities mentioned in the book… so it made things mroe interesting.  while watching it tonight i thought ‘why is this such a big deal in the Christian community?’ seriously, i remember when the book came out i heard a lot of talk about that book. one church service i remember (ahhh, the olden days when i could go to church) was based around discussing the book considered the Christian rebuttal.

People have been questioning the divinity of Jesus for centuries. People have been speculating on the Knights Templar for centuries. These concepts are not new. Christianity was literally born in a barn, so it’s not too surprising that the whole of it contains several important yet mysteriously bizarre events.  And yes, horrifying things have been done in the name of Christianity for centuries, and is still occurring today.

So should we be scared that people will just stop being Christians? this thought process, i just realized, is about three years too late. but it shows what i consider and important flaw in general christian teaching- we are taught as though all the answers have already been found. so we stop thinking. try and tell me the majority of Christians don’t have a blind (therefore dangerous) faith just like the millions who believe in evolution blindly.  No one proves these things to themselves anymore- no research being done. America has become so specialized, people have to focus on the narrow field they work in and forget everything else. Which is why mechanic’s shops can charge as much as doctor’s offices. America stopped wanting to think years ago.  We don’t need too- we’re the reigning world power.

Anyways, that was all rabbit trail leading up to my conclusion that if people’s faith really was shaken by such a book, then it’s good. Either way, those questions were already there. So they either deal with them or walk away.  Both options are essential, because no one can walk the line.  It’s better to be very sure one way or the other than fencewalking.

And my date was a pretty cool girl whom I really don’t know.  She’s pretty shy and i’m not sure what motiviaton she has to be there. it’s probably our mutual acquaintance who has tried exceptionally hard to get us to ‘hook up’, to use the parlance of our times. doubt it will go anywhere, mostly because i don’t want it to, but it was nice to meet someone who expressed interest in my company and then sit and watch a movie after a little small talk and then hang out with our mutuals acquaintances. nice nice altogether, but a far far cry away from long term dating of any type. and with this i am content.

bough two new cd’s today at the recommendation of my friend. Thom Yorke’s ‘eraser’  and medeski, martin and wood’s ‘friday afternoon in the universe’ were the two albums. my friend is getting into experimental music and both of these fit in quite well.

i also recently purchased two doobie brother’s cd’s. really enjoy both of those.

i have made it a point to buy cd’s and not use an online service like itunes. why? principle. yes, i could save money by not buying an entire album for that one song that always in my head, but i’m against for several reasons. one, manufacturers ‘lock you in’ to one service and hardware config. the best example is that itunes is designed for the ipod. if you find better rates or options somewheres else, too friggin bad cause they will penallize you for even trying to mix up vendor services. secondly, when you do download an mp3 you are using older, lower quality compression algorighms and lossy compression.  the song you hear after downloading will more than likely sound very well and good, but to make a song small enough for reasonable download, the algorithm calculates what the human is least likely to hear and gets rid of it. which works ok most of the time, excepting that we still ‘hear’ sound and frequencies but don’t necessarily process them the same as primary sounds.  ambiance and ‘live’ acoustic setting like rooms with wooden floors star to get dull after the peices one can’t hear are erased. when i pay, i want the whole song dangit, not jsut part of it. thirdly, i don’t appreciate the drm put on the music downloads. as if i’m going to pay for a song i might be allowed to put on my portable player or have a restriction as to how many times i can play it or burn it to cd…. it’s mine, dude, i payed for it so i could do what i want with it… and if you think i’m engaging in large scale music stealing operations (or any at all) then shame on you. i will not get punished for antsy media companies who refuse to create a business model that creates an atmosphere which makes file sharing frilvolous and useless.

i’m not really sure what i just wrote… hope it was as good for you as it was for me.
